Are You really ready to Stop Smoking and Why does Hypnosis make stopping smoking easier?

By the time most people book an appointment on my calendar to discuss a Quit Smoking Hypnosis session, they are usually quite clear that they want to stop smoking and by stopping smoking I’m referring obviously to wanting to quit vaping as well.

Before a person can book a hypnosis stop smoking programme with me there is a free consultation. This gives us both an opportunity to explore whether they’re ready to stop and whether Hypnotherapy for smoking cessation is the best course of action.

There are several questions on the initial booking for my phone conversation. One of them is ‘how much are you ready to quit smoking?’ from 1-10.

Believe it or not, there are people that answer 2 or 3 or 4 out of 10. Occasionally that turns out to be a misunderstanding but more often than not it is the reflection of how much that person still wants to continue smoking. Sometimes a person will tell me that they their spouse has found me or their parent and they are prepared to quit smoking through hypnosis although they don’t really believe in it and are really doing it because their spouse or parent has nagged them into it.

In this situation, the quit smoking hypnosis therapy won’t work – well perhaps, there’s a small chance that it might do anyway, but it certainly doesn’t inspire me to work with them. Selfishly, I only want to work with people who are ready to quit smoking and that’s because otherwise my success rate will plummet and I won’t be able to attract new clients for quit smoking hypnosis sessions in the future.

The reason why a hypnosis session to stop vaping or smoking is unlikely to work if the person is doing it to please someone else is because your unconscious mind is there to guide you and protect you in accordance to your greatest desires. If there is a part of you that desires to be free from smoking than I can easily connect you to that part during a hypnotic trance. If there is no desire to stop smoking in the first place – other than perhaps having a bit more money in your pocket – then my job becomes much more difficult.

Another easy way to tell how ready a person is to stop smoking is how soon they want to do it. Whenever a person books an appointment to talk about stopping smoking a long time in advance is frequently an indication that the person would like to stop but isn’t quite at the point that they’re ready. I have learned to check more than once that a person who has booked an appointment with me in my calendar to talk about stopping smoking with hypnosis intends to turn up.

By far the most common delaying tactic for someone using hypnosis for quitting smoking that I’ve found is that following a really good conversation where the person has outlined how committed they are and how much they want to stop will tell me that they won’t book now…that they will check their diary…or talk to their spouse about the money involved and get back to me.

I can probably count on my fingers the number of times that a person has got back to me following a conversation like that.

And I absolutely don’t mind. To me, this is part of my job in my quit smoking hypnosis therapy. Sometimes the conversation with me has been enough for that person to realise that they’re ready to stop smoking and they feel they don’t need to spend the money paying me to do it. And if they feel that way they’re completely right.

I spoke to a woman recently who wanted to stop smoking so she could get pregnant. She didn’t want to harm her child potentially by having a physical environment that would not be conducive to growing a baby inside her. I told her (quite honestly) that she would probably find, like most of the women I help to quit vaping or smoking that she will naturally quit as soon as she discovers she’s pregnant. This is one of the phenomena’s that I continually see: people who believe that its going to be so difficult to stop smoking without aid, do it automatically as soon as they are pregnant. Unfortunately most of those people immediately return to smoking because they’ve never made the unconscious transition to becoming a non-smoker that they do in hypnosis but it’s still a helpful phenomenon  that pregnant women discover. And although I see the women who have returned to their habit following giving birth, I’m pretty sure that there’s just as many women who never return to their smoking habit again.

So to summarise how you will know your ready to quit vaping with hypnosis or book a hypnotherapy session to stop smoking?

  • You will want to stop smoking for yourself.
  • You will want to do it as soon as possible.
  • You will not be seeking permission from someone else to do it.
  • You will be prepared to pay for it, the same way you’ve been paying to smoke.
  • You will turn up to the appointment with a diary asking me ‘how quickly can I stop?’
