Part 1: Understanding Performance Anxiety

Performance anxiety, also known as stage fright or performance nerves, is a psychological phenomenon characterized by intense fear and apprehension before or during a performance.

It can manifest as physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and mental distress, ultimately hindering performance and causing self-doubt.

For the last six weeks I’ve been working with a young girl, Eve a talented thirteen year old, who I came across with because she trains as the same place as my daughter and her mother knew that I helped a lot of other performers recover from performance anxiety.

Eva had been doing very well as an Under 12 and reached national and international level. At 12 she’d spent some time training in Spain at the Nedal training school but had had a series of high profile competitions that she felt she’d performed badly at and had suffered with performance anxiety since.  Eva, like many young tennis players, had been playing tennis since she was four and had all the skills to excel, but since the bad run, whenever she stepped onto the court her nerves would consume her, leading to poor performance and frustration. At the point that we began our work, she was considering stepping away from the sport all together.

Part 3: Eva’s Journey with Hypnosis

Initially I worked with Eva at the tennis centre where she trains but eventually due to her tennis and school commitments we had our hypnosis sessions online. One time we had a session just before a match in Spain. Through a series of hypnosis sessions, we delved into Eva’s underlying fears and used a variety of hypnotic techniques to reprogramme what had become a habitual response to the pressure of winning.

As well as re-coding the previous bad experiences of ‘perceived’ bad experiences, I worked with Eva to create powerful mind sets that she could step into easily when needed. We also used powerful NLP techniques to equip her to play confidently, visualising success.

During these sessions, Eva experienced a profound shift in her mindset. She began to see herself as a confident and capable tennis player again, visualizing herself winning matches and performing at her best. I also got her to learn easy relaxation techniques and mental exercises that she could use before and during matches to calm her nerves and stay focused.

Part 4: Unleashing the Inner Champion

As Eva continued her journey with hypnosis, she noticed a gradual improvement in her performance and confidence. She no longer felt at the mercy of her anxiety on court. Instead, she embraced a new mindset of resilience, self-assurance, and trust in her abilities.

Through hypnosis, Eva learned to harness the power of her subconscious mind and reprogramme negative thought patterns. She developed mental resilience, better coping mechanisms, and a heightened sense of self-belief.

As a result, her performance anxiety gradually diminished, paving the way for her to unleash her inner champion.
